I want to share with you a prophetic encounter that radically changed the life of someone I once knew and that greatly impacted my life as well.

The year was 1975, and this man of God was in dire circumstances. He was experiencing extreme internal bleeding when he had an out-of-body experience. His spirit left his body, and he found himself before the judgment seat of Christ.

Jesus asked him one question:

“Did you learn how to love?”

The man was exposed. He could not lie; Jesus already knew his answer. He knew that he had not loved well during his short life as a believer on earth.

So he replied with deep sadness, “No.”

Jesus responded,

“You are not ready for heaven. Go and learn how to love.”

Immediately, the man was back in his body as the doctors were feverishly operating on him. He survived the incident and made his quest in life to love well.

I think he succeeded. This unique prophet, Bob Jones, died at an old age almost 40 years later, on Valentine’s Day 2014—the day known for love.

When I was young, I wanted to know my divine calling, so I decided to go on a fast to hear from the Lord. I was hoping that God would call me to be the next Billy Graham.

(I so admire Mr. Graham to this day that he is in one of the only pictures on my desk: Along with my parents and family is a picture of me with Billy Graham in his hotel room before the 2004 Billy Graham Crusade in Pasadena.)

During my fast, God surprised me by saying,

“I have called you to a ministry of love.”

This shocked me. I knew it was God speaking because love was not on my radar at the time. I was somewhat disappointed not to get the answer I was looking for.

But now I see the wisdom behind this calling. As much as I enjoy preaching to crowds, sharing the gospel and seeing souls come to Jesus, my ultimate goal is to love like Jesus loves.

May it be yours as well.
